Tree removal pricing is the question we hear most often, and it’s a reasonable one to ask before committing. The honest answer is that it depends on the job — but there’s a real range that most Columbia-area removals fall into, and there are specific things that push a job higher or lower.
Here’s what we see in practice.
What Most Tree Removals Cost in Columbia
Most residential tree removals in Columbia, MO land between $1,000 and $3,000. That’s a wide range, but it reflects the actual spread of jobs we do: a manageable tree in an open backyard is a different animal than a 70-foot silver maple three feet from a roof line.
A few things happen in every removal that you’re paying for regardless of size: setup and safety prep, the actual cutting work, chipping or hauling debris, and leaving the site clean. The base cost is real even on smaller jobs.
What Drives the Price Up
Tree size
The single biggest factor. A small ornamental tree under 25 feet is straightforward. A mature pin oak or silver maple that’s 60–80 feet tall requires significantly more work — more cuts, more rigging, more time, and usually a larger crew.
Location and access
A tree in an open field can often be felled in one piece. A tree wedged between a fence, a house, and the neighbor’s garage has to come down in sections. Each section has to be rigged so it doesn’t swing into something. That takes longer and requires more skill.
Access for our equipment matters too. If we can get a bucket truck or crane to the base of the tree, that speeds things up. If the only access is through a side gate across soft ground, we’re working harder for the same result.
Crane-assisted removal
Some jobs require a crane — large trees near structures, trees on steep lots, trees where there’s no safe felling direction. Crane work means a second piece of equipment, a second crew position, and more precise coordination. It’s the right tool for the job when it’s needed, but it adds to the cost.
Tree Wizard is crane-capable, which means we can handle jobs some companies have to turn down or subcontract. If a crane quote comes in higher than a competitor who’s quoting the same job without one, ask them how they plan to get the tree down without it.
Condition of the tree
Dead or brittle trees are riskier to work on, not easier. Brittle wood doesn’t bend — it snaps. That changes how the crew approaches cuts and rigging. A compromised tree takes more careful, slower work.
Stump handling
Stump work is almost always priced separately. The stump itself isn’t part of the removal unless you specifically include it.
Stump flushing is a chainsaw cut that takes the stump as close to ground level as possible. It’s cheaper and less invasive than grinding — it removes the trip hazard and improves the look of the yard, but the stump is still there. You can’t reliably mow over it.
Stump grinding mechanically removes the stump and is the right call if you want to mow the area or replant. Grinding does leave a pile of wood chip grindings on site — they’ll settle over time, but they don’t disappear on their own. Removal of the grindings and replacement with topsoil is available as an add-on if you want the area ready for grass or planting.
What’s Typically Included
Every Tree Wizard removal includes:
- On-site assessment before the job starts
- All cutting, rigging, and lowering work
- Chipping of branches and brush
- Hauling debris away from the property
- Leaving the site clean
Firewood is sometimes available by request if the wood is sound and you want it. Let us know when you call.
Getting an Accurate Number
The only way to get an accurate price is to see the tree. Size, lean, condition, what’s around it, how we’d need to stage equipment — all of that affects the quote, and none of it is visible from a photo or an address.
Tree Wizard provides free on-site estimates in Columbia, MO and the surrounding area. Call (573) 442-1838 or see our full Columbia, MO tree services.
When you get an estimate from anyone, ask these questions:
- Is debris hauling included or is that extra?
- What about the stump?
- Are you licensed and insured?
- Who’s on the crew — is the owner on-site?
Those answers tell you a lot about who you’re actually hiring. Tree Wizard is fully licensed and insured, and Chris Haubner — ISA Certified Arborist, owner since 2003 — is hands-on with every job.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does tree removal cost in Columbia, MO?
Most tree removals in Columbia run between $1,000 and $3,000. Smaller trees under 30 feet may cost less; large trees over 60 feet, trees near structures, or jobs requiring a crane typically run higher. Call (573) 442-1838 for a free on-site estimate.
Is stump removal included in the tree removal price?
No — stump work is a separate line item. Stump flushing (a chainsaw cut to near-ground level) is the cheaper option: it removes the trip hazard and improves appearance but the stump remains, so you can't mow over it. Stump grinding mechanically removes the stump and is what you need if you want to mow or replant — it leaves wood chip grindings on site that will settle; removal of the grindings and topsoil replacement is available as an add-on. Mention it when you call (573) 442-1838 and we'll quote it together.
Does tree removal cost more near a house or power line?
Yes. When a tree has to come down in pieces rather than being felled in one direction — because of a fence, structure, or power line in the fall zone — the job takes more time and requires more precise rigging. That complexity is reflected in the price.
Will my homeowner's insurance cover tree removal?
Coverage depends on your policy and the circumstances. Removal of a tree that fell on an insured structure is often covered. Removal of a standing tree (even a dead or hazardous one) is typically not. Tree Wizard provides photos, documentation, and detailed invoices to support the insurance claim review process.
Do you give free estimates?
